1883 Silver Dollar Making the Grade

Both coins in the image below are valuable 1883-S Morgan dollars. However the one on the right is worth twice the other. Each the same date, both struck at the San Francisco mint, the difference is only a slight amount of wear. Looking closely and comparing the two for a minute it becomes apparent there is more detail of design on one than the other. Remarkably, this is enough detail doubling the value to a collector.

The nice collectible coin on the left grades 'extremely fine' to the right and slightly nicer this coin grades 'about uncirculated.' Close-up as collectors see the coin, one area to examine is the leaves below the cotton blossoms. On the about uncirculated coin the leaves are fuller and give the impression of dimension when compared with flatness of the extremely fine coin. Using the same criteria examine the fine lines in the hair, the cotton blossoms themselves, even the folds in the cap.

With study there are very real differences between the two coins. Subtle differences yes, but as seen by a collector, clearly one coin is a better candidate to add to a collection. Demand and the market for rare coins have identified just how scarce some silver dollars have become in nice condition. It is apparent careful judgment of condition is necessary to accurately value 1883-S Morgan dollars.

1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Value is Conditional

Essential to finding highest accurate coin values is determining condition. By closely examining the surface and judging the amount of wear reflects its 'grade.' Entries in the value chart above are listed under these grade headings. And in the case of your 1883 silver dollar, if struck at a branch mint, many subtle details have a significant role.

1881 Silver Dollar Value

Uncirculated: A silver dollar in the 'uncirculated' grade never saw use in commerce. Your coin must not show any signs of wear and retain the look of brand new, often with natural toning that occurs to silver coins. Look for the first signs of abrasion from wear on the highest part of Liberty's cheek below the eye and the front of her chin. Wear to the surface removes the delicate texture of original mint luster leaving these areas dull.

Extremely Fine: Slight wear but still sharply defined with abundant detail remaining defines the extremely fine grade. A couple of points to examine, the hair behind the ear and the large cotton blossoms just above. Silver dollars in this condition still retail ample detail but also display evidence of minor wear. Further discussion of this pivotal grade for an 1883 dollar is found below.

Fine: Time in circulation has removed a moderate amount of detail on a silver dollar in 'fine' condition. Large portions of hair have merged with only the deepest of lines showing. Wheat ears above the lettering of 'Liberty' and the cotton blossoms just below are now just outlines. Silver dollars in fine condition give the impression of lost detail but not overly so.

Good: Noticeable, heavy wear has reduced the entire design to just a few elements. A silver dollar with extensive wear is designated as 'good' condition. Wear has removed most detail leaving Liberty as an outline in low relief. Remaining are a few and now flattened hair curls showing behind her neck and ear. In this condition your 1883 Morgan silver dollar value is tied to bullion silver price.
